Say hello to the new Bruin!

As Mr. Philip announced this past Monday, there has been a recent change in the logo for the Bruin Bear this year.
Rather than keeping the old bear leaning on the B (whose gender, as Mr. Philip pointed out, is rather obscure), the school is adopting a new logo as seen below:

Due to some of its alternate versions including a bear in white rather than yellow, the new logo has gained some interesting reception from the community, including an idea that Wick should change its logo to the Polar Bears.

Premiere League Outlook for Saturday

By Peter Khoury ’13

Due to a culmination of his hard work, perseverance, and pride, Sir Alex Ferguson, manager of Manchester United, has a chance to accomplish a long time goal of his on Saturday May 14, 2011. Twenty-five years ago, Ferguson took over at Manchester United, with the goal of unseating Liverpool FC as the “king” of the English Premier League. It seems that today, Ferguson will achieve this goal.
Today, Manchester United travel to Blackburn, where they need only a draw to secure their English Premier League title. Further, to obtain the title, the Red Devils of Manchester United need only one point over the course of their final two games. For this reason, it seems impossible for Alex Ferguson not to help Manchester United obtain the league trophy for a record 19th time. In doing so, Ferguson not only puts himself in a select group as one of the greatest managers in English Premier League history, but he also achieves his goal of making Manchester United the most successful club in England.
While Manchester United and Alex Ferguson prepare to celebrate achieving European football glory, several other teams around the English Premier League are entering this weekend hoping to keep themselves out of the “bottom three teams” in the league. One team hoping not to be relegated is West Ham United. Though their chances look grim, Scott Parker, one of the leaders of the squad, says, “All we can do is win our final two games and then see what happens. You never know”.
In addition, the Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have found themselves near the bottom three for the majority of this season, are desperately in need of two wins (six points) in their final two games of the season against Sunderland and Blackburn respectively. Wolves’ manager Mike McCarthy had this to say about his focus on the next two games with respect to other teams around the league. “We need to win our games, we need to get our points, and if we get our points, there is nobody or nothing that can do anything about it,” he said. “Let me concentrate on that and not be worried what Wigan, West Ham, Birmingham and all the others are doing.
There is a lot to watch out for and follow this Saturday, the 14th of May. However, probably the most notable and special moment of the day will come when Alex Ferguson’s goal of unseating Liverpool as the most successful club in England is accomplished and when Manchester United have won their 19th English Premier League title.

Interview with Lauren Demeter

Below is an interview conducted by Matthew Cassoli with Lauren Demeter, a representative from the Marshall Legacy Institute. The function of the program is to train dogs to sniff out mines. The bolded lines are Matthew’s questions and the non-bolded type are Ms. Demeter’s responses.

Training dogs to sniff out mines is not what one might think of when they think of a typical humanitarian charity. How did you come in to contact with this very specific field of helping people and how does it compare to more broad-spectrum associations, like the Red Cross for example?

The Marshall Legacy Institute is named in honor of General George C. Marshall, who after World War II established the Marshall Plan as a pledge from the United States to rebuild a create stronger economic foundations for war-torn countries. MLI’s underlying mission statement is to help war-torn countries help themselves. Developing mine detection dog capacities in mine-contaminated countries fits into this mission because landmines are a major obstacle to rebuilding. The work of MDDs helps return land to the people to be used for economic purposes, which helps the surrounding businesses and economy thrive. Our survivor’s assistance and vocational training programs are not only a humanitarian mission, our services provide the individuals with the possibility of taking care of themselves rather than being dependent on their family and community for care.

Interview with Mac Singer, President of “Stop Sarcoma”

What is Stop Sarcoma? What are its objectives? (what is Sarcoma?)
Stop Sarcoma is a club I started last year in memory of my father, who died of Sarcoma in 2007. Sarcoma is cancer of bone, cartilage, and fat tissue. The money we raise goes to Sarcoma research at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston to help save lives and extend the time families have with their loved ones.

How do you go about achieving these objectives?
We’ve raised money by selling food, hats, and T-shirts. Most recently we raised money and awareness through an Open Mic Night in Baker Theater. It is great so many people got involved to showcase Brunswick’s great musical talent.

What other organizations are you allied with?
The money we raise goes to Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

How have you been operating at Brunswick? (club attendance, population, sales, etc)
Usually I hold a meeting with the 30 or so members in the club once a week. In these meetings we decide how we will raise money and how we will organize sales and events. In these meetings members also volunteer to help out with the sales or events.

How did you officially make this year’s Open Mic Night the “Stop Sarcoma Open Mic Night?”
I asked Mr. Philip last year and worked out a date for the event. Mr. Philip was supportive of raising money for Stop Sarcoma and at the same time supporting the Brunswick music program.

Why is Sarcoma an especially important issue to you and the community?
Sarcoma is an especially important issue to me because my dad died of sarcoma after battling it for 18 years. Most people don’t understand what sarcoma is, but if caught early and treated aggressively the life expectancy is much greater. Like many other cancers, sarcoma is a disease that can only be treated, never cured. Sarcoma also varies widely from person to person and over the course of one’s life, so different people require very different frequently changing treatments. The money we give to Dana Farber will go to help find new treatments, to lengthen the lives of those with the disease and raise awareness of the disease.

What is something any person can do to help fight sarcoma?
To help fight sarcoma, any person can go to https://www.kintera.org/site/c.kfINKTOzFqG/b.5879199/k.59AE/Giving_and_Volunteering/apps/ka/sd/donorcustom.asp. Just select “Sarcoma and Bone Cancers” and the money you give will go to sarcoma research at Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

Open Mic Night appeared to be a success, what do you think?
I definitely agree. We raised a lot from so much support and each act was really great. Everyone who performed was fantastic.

Where does “Stop Sarcoma” go from here?
Next year we’ll have another Open Mic Night, and we’ll continue to raise money through sales. Any other event we think of we’ll try to organize for next year as well.

Is there anything else people should know about you and your club?
Any money donated to the Dana Farber Sarcoma department would be greatly appreciated. I have provided the information above.

Thanks to Mac Singer and Stop Sarcoma for organizing such a great event!

BOINC

BOINC stands for Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing. Basically, BOINC allows for millions of users to use their computers together as one to achieve a project for any variety of organizations. What this allows people to do is use their computer to contribute to a larger task. So, when a user is not using his or her computer, they can enable some kind of BOINC program and allow his or her computer contribute its computing power to whatever task the user has chosen.

The practical application of this allows users to give their spare computer power – the computing their computer could be doing while they are not using it- to some cause they find worthy. Causes include predicting natural disasters, researching languages, simulating three dimensional models of proteins interacting with each other, genetic analysis, and epidemiology. My personal favorite project is trying to find incredibly large prime numbers. So far, “PrimeGrid” has found more than one thousand prime numbers with more than one thousand digits. They expect to find a prime number with more than fifteen million digits soon.

Using BOINC, users can contribute to a cause they care about or are just interested in. The client is easy to use; I set mine to stop contributing its computer power to the climate model it is working on between 7 and 10 o’clock so that I can do my homework with absolutely no worry of my computer locking up. (This has only happened once though. As I type this now I am running 5 applications and BOINC all at once and have had no troubles.)

Note: While the spirit of BOINC is a great one, users should beware where they give their CPU to. They allow access to their computer to whatever organization they connect to. If these organizations were malicious, serious damage could be done to somebody’s data or computer. Please be certain to verify that an organization is trustworthy before opening your computer to them.
